A number of times now I’ve planned to post here but I’ve barely had a spare moment since getting back from Auckland last Tuesday. Lost to say about various topics really but I won’t have time for all that tonight. I had thought I’d manage it this weekend but I’ve been having problems with my internet connection. I’ve been using an all-in-one US Robotics 9106 ADSL modem/router/4-port switch/firewall/802.11g access point for many months now but recently as my usage patterns have changed the unit would crash about once every half hour and speeds have been rather abysmal too. It turned out that other people have this problem with the USR9106 too and there is no firmware upgrade or option I can change that would fix it. So I’ve now replaced it with a D-Link DGL-4300 gigabit/802.11g box paired with a standalone D-Link DSL-502T ADSL router (There is no single box solution that would improve things). So far I’m impressed. Speeds are better, the number of simultaneous connections is better and of course with the gigabit switch, my gigabit enabled computers are flying. Oh, and these units don’t crash no matter what I throw at them. Good stuff! ^_^ I’m especially impressed with the DGL-4300, it’s one of D-Link’s gaming routers with a nice black case lined with pretty blue LEDs and it just exudes performance with all the traffic shaping options.
Anyhow, I need to get to sleep. Been working most of the night… @_@

First day of Armageddon. Got to the place at 6:30am with about 20 people there already but as it turned out it didn’t matter much since the typical line confusion meant that many people who arrived later ended up being right at the front. As it turned out though, I was among the first 4-5 through the door so that all worked well. ^_^ Much to my surprise, it turned out to be a figure bonanza. My only intended purchase was the KOF Pinky Streets that the Graphic Novel Cafe were getting in. Seong of the GNC was quick to remind me though that an Ai Yori Aoshi figure had taken my fancy last time I came to Auckland. Vagabonds though had many unexpected goodies and I came away with a Dead or Alive Ayane figure (it was random selection), a full set of Magna Carta figures (Woot!), a full Dead or Alive gashapon set (bought purely because the Kasumi and Lei Fang figures were cool) and a Rondo Robe gashapon set (I didn’t like the set based on the pics but seeing it in the flesh in their store changed my mind). I also picked up a figure of Meg from Burst Angel (I liked the figure right from when I first saw it a while back) from Pulsar Max. I’ll try to post some pics when I get back to Hamilton.
I didn’t really get a lot otherwise, the music selection I’ve seen while in Auckland has been less than inspiring and that’s even from my favourite haunts of Fasayo, Real Groovy and Borders. Perhaps it’s indicates something regarding my musical taste but I couldn’t find any of the list of CDs I kind of hoped I’d run across. Guess I’ll have to make use of the Internet for this sometime.
Spent most of the evening watching anime with the guys staying in the backpackers which was fun. I think I have to pick up Cromatie High, I was already tempted to do so based on the previews I’d seen but it’s what I’d hoped and more.

Well, what an interesting day. The bus trip to Auckland was a bit of a nightmare for a number of reasons but eventually we got to the terminal at Skycity well overdue. The weather was terrible and I got quite a soaking before finding a $10 umbrella in a pharmacy. Ended up meeting up with a group of people from Hamitlon/the Madman forums and went out to dinner with them. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much on alcohol in one night. ^_^ Unfortunately what Kurt will inevitably post in his LJ is true (assuming he doesn’t exagerate) but overall I feel pretty decent on the scale of things and expect to be up bright and early tomorrow for the start of Armageddon. In fact, I feel downright sober at this point. I have my tickets and all I need to to is cross the road and I’m in the venue. The hotel I’m staying in is amazing (Well, in comparison with other places I’ve stayed in the past) and pretty much anything I’d want is provided. I should be off to bed now, I’ve got an early start tomorrow, but I just wanted to post something here. More soon.

I’ve really not been sure at all what to make of the days since my last post. I’ve had some days where I’ve been more depressed than I’ve been for a while and other days where things were fine or actually good even. The strange thing is that there have been no events to trigger either state of mind which is rather unusual for me. I’ve also noticed dreams I’ve been having (usually I have no recollection at all) although I remember little to no content of them. It just really seems my mood has been swinging like crazy for no particular reason whatsoever. I have no idea what to make of this really. I guess only time will tell.
Jack Thompson has been amusing me for the last few days with his antics. For those that don’t know, he’s a Florida laywer who has made a name for himself by stirring up a fuss over violent video games. I’m with him on principle, I agree young kids shouldn’t be playing the Grand Theft Auto games, Manhunt, Postal 1/2/3 etc but this guy has done more to discredit his cause than anyone and now that people are starting to realise what a loose cannon he is, he’s lashing out in all directions. If you disagree with him no matter how politely it appears he will call you a twit/idiot, threaten to sue you for harrasment, tell you to visit a mental hospital, accuse you of being on drugs or will insult you in any other way he sees fit. This may just be for something as simple as that he didn’t like the questions being asked. I’m actually quite tempted to contact the guy (I have his email address) and ask him some questions without any of the trolling of many other people contacting him just to see if he can give a coherant and plausible response when presented with something with no agendas or ideas of proving anything. If I get a few spare moments to carefully craft such a message I think I will and honestly I’m not sure what to expect back.
Might not post again for a while as I’ll be off to Auckland on Friday. Should be a lot of fun it seems and lots of people to catch up with!

Well, I spent the weekend quietly for once mostly vegeing in front of the PS2 finishing Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer’s Call. I had thought I wasn’t too far from the end beforhand but I didn’t finish it until last thing Sunday, all up it took about 50-ish hours total according to the in-game timer. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and am now looking forward to the sequel (I might just grab it from the US now my PS2 is modded) and the PSP Shin Megami Tensei coming out in Japan sometime in December. Hopefully they’ll do an english port on that. When I say I finished the game, I meant that I’d completed one ending. There are about 4 to 5 endings for the game and one of those appears to require another good 10-15 hours spent in a whole different section of the game and defeating uber hard bosses including one said to be very difficult even when your characters are at level 99. The story is very engaging so I can see I’ll be quite tempted to play on. When not playing that, I’d been playing World of Warcraft. Level 45 now (almost 46) and I finally have a mount to ride. It took me so long to save up the 90 gold to get my little skeletal horsie (I will post pics) but it really makes travel so much faster. Plus it just looks so damn styley with my character.
So anyway, I spent most of today driving around since I was off work, but this evening I decided to catch up on my movie backlog. Got through “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” which was awesome if for nothing more than the soundtrack full of David Bowie tracks and acoustic versions of Bowie tracks sung in Portugese. The movie itself was interesting being so character driven and the story was not typical carbon-copy Hollowood drivel, both bonuses in my book. I don’t think I’d really call it a comedy as most promos I’ve seen imply, but that didn’t make me like it any less. It did have some moments that were pretty hillarious though.
After that, I turned out the lights to watch Korean horror, “A Tale of Two Sisters” released here by Madman. Once again I have to take issue with the advertised genre to an extent, it seemed rather lacking in horror for a horror movie but I don’t know what genre I’d consider more appropriate….thriller perhaps? It’s one of the few movies that when I got to the ending I just didn’t get it, but some of that may have been due to me replying to emails and missing a few pieces of scenes near the end. A quick rewatch of the last 10 minutes made me realise what went down. Overall I liked this movie quite a lot, especially the art direction. Supposedly the story is loosely based on a folklore tale although it feels like it has been significantly modernised. I have seen similar plot devices used before but it’s rare so I didn’t expect things would wind up quite as they did but I like a movie that does that. One niggle though is that the video quality could have been better.
Been listening to some new music but I’m still at the burn in phase where it’s best not to comment.

Been a while since I last posted anything, largely because there’s been quite a lot going on and when I’ve had free moments I’ve wanted to relax. Also we’ve got family staying at the moment so I’m not online as much as usual.
I’m settling in to my new role at work, I’m now managing three projects. Made a few small changes to how things are done so far but I don’t want to do much until I’m more settled into things and some of the current backlog is out of the way.
I’m thoroughly enjoying the Sony PSP so far, the range of current and future games is the most appealing to me of any console since the Dreamcast. Whether it will live up to that statement or not remains to be seen but so far things seems rather promising. I’ve been enjoying the cell-shaded fighting game “Bleach” and plan to order the already released sequel off Lik-Sang sometime. The PSP firmware version 2.0 was cracked recently so I’ve unlocked my PSP and have been enjoying all the extra software I can now run. On a side note, it seems almost compulsory to talk about the Nintendo DS when mentioning the PSP or vice-versa. Looking at the two sides, it seems clear to me that these things are targetting very different groups. The DS seems to have a wealth of puzzle games and new concepts (some of which may or may not be considered games) and to some people that seems really appealing. Personally I hate puzzle games (no, really) and I’m very picky with my concept games so the DS has almost zero appeal to me personally but there is no denying there is a market for these games and I’m all for any innovation they can bring. The arguments of DS owners also seem largely along the lines of “No PSP games appeal to me” which is fine. Having said that, a number of them also seem to say there’s nothing worth playing on PSP and to me this just tells me they’re jaded with gaming in general since even many of the mass market PSP games are well made and fun. I certainly have no doubt myself that right now the PSP most suits my gaming taste. As to the DS, well, I might get one oneday when they release one that doesn’t cut into my hands. Things like Jump Superstars and a Xenosaga port do look interesting to me.
