Had an eventful day yesterday in one way or another. Finally picked up the 60GB iPod I had been planning to get for a while. I actually got a great deal. I didn’t realise till I opened the box later at work but it was the old model 60GB one. Normally this would be a bad thing but the only real difference in this case is that the old model came with more stuff and cost more. Not that I paid more though, I got it for the much cheaper price of the new model. Certainly can’t complain about that.

I’m actually posting this from my Pocket PC. Seems to be decent for the task.

Finally finished organizing my trip to Wellington in april yesterday too. I really need to get out of Hamilton for a while. I feel the depression I had over the last year or so has been more than under control for quite a long time now but things here haven’t really been helping it along, it’s more a case of things improving despite the local environment, not because of it. I have direction and am confident and happy in where I am going, but the path there has felt like an uphill battle so far. Wellington is a lively and vibrant city so I’m sure I’ll have a good time and it will be a nice change. Might meet a few people from some online forums I haunt too which will be cool.

Had an interesting Easter. All sorts of stuff happening. Managed to squeeze in some Final Fantasy X-2 which I’d been meaning to play for ages.

Also watched some Mezzo DSA and Full Metal Alchemist. Both are enjoyable, the latter especially so. Think I might have to pick that on DVD when it comes out here soon.

As usual things have been pretty busy and it has kept me from updating. I am really looking forward to having a few days off work around easter. Level 34 in World of Warcraft in case you were interested but I’ve not been playing it that heavily. I have had a few games of “The Seafarers of Katan” and “Risk” with family and friends over the past few days. Quite a bit of fun and it’s nice to actually see the people you are playing against.

I’ve been listening to Tori Amos’ new album, “The Beekeeper” over a few days. At this point I’m not entirely sure what I think of it. It’s release surprised me a bit since I had not heard any talk of a new album and it didn’t feel that long since “Scarlet’s Walk” came out to me anyway. I read some reviews and listener impressions and all were very positive. I saw many 4/5 and 5/5 ratings and a number of people talked of it being her best album since “Little Earthquakes”. I took some of this with a grain of salt since I’ve liked all of her albums and in my opinion she has released masses of great stuff since “Little Earthquakes” but it still lead me to believe this was something different or that she was somehow going back to her roots. Now if you were maybe expecting me to say how much I hate the album, that isn’t going to happen, I do think it is a very good album, but I am getting ahead of myself here.

Just to clarify my position a bit…When I say I have liked all her albums, I own all of them on CD and where special editions were available, I own them, even the rare Australasian tour edition of “Under the Pink” that many more recent fans of Tori would kill for. I also have imported quite a few EPs and other rare-ish stuff so I feel I’m in quite a good position to make a somewhat accurate assessment of this new album from the perspective of a genuine fan. While I do like all of her albums, I probably like “Strange Little Girls” least but Tori didn’t write these songs. “Boys for Pele” and CD1 of “To Venus & Back” didn’t immediately grab me, but over time I have grown to like these albums a lot. “Little Earthquakes”, “Under The Pink”, “From The Choirgirl Hotel” and “Scarlet’s Walk” I liked right from the outset on the first listen. I’m not going to go into EPs here but this should give anyone familiar with her albums an idea where I’m coming from.

To me “The Beekeeper” feels like a natural progression from her previous work with elements composited from most of her recent albums. A touch of “Scarlet’s Walk” here, a dab of “Strange Little Girls” there and some growth in new directions. In some ways it feels a lot like a concept album, a theme of spirituality seems to purvade through all tracks. Not to say that the tracks sound similar musically, there is a lot of variety in there but they feel like they belong together. On my first listen through I felt there were some standout tracks, but on later listenings it feels more consistent overall. “Sweet The Sting”, “The Beekeeper” and “Hoochie Woman” though are probably my favourites but that will always come down to personal taste. On the other hand, I am not fond of gospel chiors in general and their use on some tracks is a bit much for me personally although I don’t feel it detracts from the album really. I have been listening to the album while writing this and I already think it is starting to grow on me quite a bit. Maybe it will just be another one I grow to appreciate more as I get to know it better.

I was just catching up on the news this morning on my websites of choice and from there ended up reading comments which then led on to blogs, etc. The story in this case was Apple suing three supposed blog sites to force them to reveal their sources. As to the case itself, I have little to say. As much as I enjoy reading rumors sites, there is no way this information can be considered of public interest, it isn’t Apple that has committed any crimes here, it is the owners of the sites involved and their sources, so I really have to side with Apple.

What does bother me though is some of the reasons people give to justify their support for Apple. The prime example I have seen relates to the iPod mini. The story goes that rumor site Think Secret posted details about the iPod mini a few weeks before it’s release. They had all the details correct but one; the price. The mini came out US$50 dearer than was expected. This is where I get to my point. According to many bloggers and others posting on Apple related forums, the rumors led people to be dissappointed when the mini came out more expensive than they had expected and this caused Apple’s stock price to fall and hurt Apple’s profits. Now the stock price, sure, shareholders regularly pay attention to non-existent trends, incorrect technobabble and what ever pieces of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt is being spread by the compeition. As to the loss in profits though, this is a bit of a stretch.

What we are talking about here is the kind of person where all of the following is true:
• Will read rumors of an upcoming product.
• Will be sufficiently excited enough to decide to buy it in the future when it is released.
• Will have enough disposable income to afford the product at the released price.
• Will be so disappointed upon release due to the price change that they will decide not to make the purchase.
• Would have been willing to pay the full release price if they had not seen the rumor suggesting it would be cheaper.

Now the number of people reading rumor sites is obviously nowhere near the potential market for an iPod mini. I have no idea how big this group actually is but I feel even an estimate of 5% of the market is generous. Most people have much better things to do than waste time on the internet trawling for future product rumors. It seems clear to me then that any such rumor is going to have an insignificant effect on the profits of such a product. When applying the other criteria mentioned in the list, this group will clearly get much smaller. Someone who could not afford the extra US$50 would never have bought the product at the actual price irrespective of the rumor so cannot be counted as a lost sale. The last item in the list is particularly important. How many people would have happily paid full price but after hearing a rumor that the product would be US$50 cheaper decided the final price was too much? Now I have no doubt there may be a few people who for some reason or the other did feel this way, there are always a few, but to suggest there are any substantial amount of people who feel this way is just ridiculous.

I don’t know it’s just that talk like this sounds so familiar…like all that talk of billions of dollars in lost profits from all those albums downloaded by students…yeah…right.

I hate to say it but I’m bored tonight. Normally I always have something to do but right now I feel so tired and lacking motivation that I just don’t want to do anything even though I don’t feel like sitting around doing nothing either. It’s not that I hate taking a moment to rest, I do try to do that when I need it. Kind of hard to describe. Probably just too busy at work today. Maybe I just need a good sleep. :-/

I’ve got some new features for this site that I’ve started working on. Actually been thinking about it for a while. I won’t be giving too much away now, but all going well, there should be new features afoot soon.

On a side note, finally broke level 30 in World of Warcraft. Got a reasonable selection of new abilities. Not playing it anywhere near as much as I was but it’s still good. Doubt I’ll make it to 60 but who knows what happens.

Still waiting for news of my iPod or the video cable I ordered last week. I really don’t mind waiting for things normally but in the last year or so it has seemed that everything I buy has a mandatory one month delay associated with it. One of these days I will buy something and will be able to actually leave with it from the store right away. I really have no comprehension of how I will feel on that day.

Just upgraded the site to the latest Wordpress release and upgraded all the comment spam filtering as well. Yes, I get a lot of comment spam. All sorts of crap about online poker sites and yellow Chinese moneys (yes, really). Enough about that though, I don’t want to give them any more publicity than they deserve. If any of them actually ever read this, I just want them to know that if I ever meet them in person and I know that they are the ones who spammed my site…I will punch them in the face as hard as I can. Ah…I can but dream…
